UK faces chocolate shortage over Christmas, according to reports

Nina McLaughlin

The festive season is almost upon us, and with it comes thoughts of all the delicious treats that are tradition during the party season.

From tubs of Celebrations to Terry’s Chocolate Oranges, chocolate is a big part of Christmas for many foodies.

However, if you’re looking forward to feasting on a box of chocolatey goodness this holiday season, you may find yourself being disappointed.

A union has warned that chocolate obsessives may be disappointed as there may be a shortage of the sweet treats after 100 percent of staff voted to back strike action.

Cargill Cocoa and Chocolate is one of the UK’s largest chocolate suppliers.

However, after workers at their Worksop factory have voted to take industrial action, it is looking like we may struggle to find some beloved chocolates on the shelves over the festive season.

“The spectre of Christmas without this beloved yuletide treat would be devastating,” said GMB Union’s Cameron Mitchell said, per The Independent.

“That’s exactly what’s on the cards if company bosses don’t act urgently to avoid strike action.

“Workers aren’t demanding gold-wrapped pay-outs, instead they’re asking for a pay packet that covers the bills. We urge company top brass to urgently back around the table with a fair offer for our members.”

The strike dates are yet to be announced, but are expected to be revealed in the coming days.
