Man drowns in lough ramor trying to save dog

His death is being treated as a tragic accident

Tributes have been paid to a man who drowned while trying to rescue his dog from a lake over the Easter weekend.

Cathal Mulvaney, 44, died after getting into difficulty at Lough Ramor in County Cavan, Ireland. He was out walking his dog around 10am on Sunday morning when the tragic incident took place.

It is thought that he went into the lake after his dog in a bid to save him. The dog also died in the incident, according to reports.

The Gardaí said they had been called along with other emergency services to reports of an unresponsive man at the lake on Easter Sunday.

Mulvaney was taken to Cavan General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

They said his death is being treated as a tragic accident.

The local community is in shock after the tragedy, and all music in the local Lakeside Hotel in Virginia town was called off on Sunday night as a gesture of respect to him, the Irish Mirror reports.

Paying tribute local GAA club CLG Cuchulainn said: “Deepest condolences to the Mulvaney family after the tragic passing of Cathal. Cathal played for Cuchulainns for many years and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.”
