Tourists say Turkey has become ‘too expensive’ and resorts will be ’empty’ within years

Some are predicting it will become a ghost town

A number of holidaymakers have taken to TikTok to explain how the destination has experienced skyrocketing prices.

One user, slimwadie5, said he saw one speed boat company charging a huge £120 for an hour-long ride.

He went as far to say that the Turkey was "becoming like London prices."

He said: "I went to Burger King and it was £5 - that's cheap. I'm sat in this place now - for a burger it's £12. For a water it's £2 - it's becoming like London prices. My sister, and her little family, said they're not going to come back again, because they're just. I've seen some posts on here where people are saying, give it a few more years, and Turkey's going to be dead."

In his video, he showed how 'empty' the Turkish beaches and resorts were.

Another TikTok user, known as justjennybenny, agreed there had been a "weird vibe" in Turkey this year.

She said in a video that it had been "so quiet" in Marmaris, which she visits regularly.

She explained that the area was usually much busier than it had been this year.

Jenny said: "The place is dead. We went to the beach yesterday, and we didn't leave the beach until gone 8pm, and we walked through Icmeler - all the restaurants were empty.

"It just has a weird vibe about it. We visited Marmaris the other day, and it's like 50% of people are not here. It's such a weird feeling. I feel like we're here during term-time."

Although she admitted that prices have risen, she was still shocked by just how quiet it had been this summer, the Express reports.

A number of people weighed in as to why people were shunning Turkey this year.

Addressing the inflation issue, one person said: "Turkey prices are gone sky high as their inflation rate is now 71.6%(June 2024) as compared to England 2.2% Ireland 1.9%"

Someone else commented: "I was there 3 times last year. April, July and October. We witnessed the surge in prices first hand and the extreme over selling. Turkey was cheap, but now you are paying British prices."

Another shared: "I've visited Turkey twice a year for 20 years. Last year was probably my last time. The prices were terrible. Felt ripped off at every turn. Haven't booked this year - as you say, there was a vibe."

A fourth wrote: "I've just returned from Antalya. It was dead. All prices have gone up massively. They all want Euro not Lira."
