Investigators probe suspected ‘chain-reaction’ rescue in Spanish villa tragedy that left couple dead

Investigators are probing a tragic chain of events in Spain

The couple, aged 45 and 50, were discovered in a hot tub at a residential complex in Cullera, a town south of Valencia, on Tuesday afternoon. 

Spanish Civil Guard investigators are reportedly examining whether one of them suffered a serious medical emergency in the water, with the other then dying while attempting to help. 

Small puncture wounds were reportedly found on at least one of the bodies, although investigators have not established what caused them.

Their children are understood to have initially searched for their parents after repeatedly calling out and getting no response. 

They eventually went through the property room by room before finding the couple on the lowest floor, where the hot tub was located. They then contacted the property owner, who alerted police.

Forensic results could hold the key to what happened

A homicide unit is now investigating, while a local judge has imposed a secrecy order as authorities try to determine whether the deaths were accidental or the result of a crime. 

Autopsies are believed to have been carried out at Valencia’s Institute of Forensic Medicine, with the findings being sent to the investigating judge at a court in nearby Sueca.

So far, investigators have reportedly found no signs of forced entry, while CCTV footage outside the property has not shown anything suspicious. There is also no indication that the children knew their parents were in danger before making the discovery.

The reported “chain-reaction accident” remains one possibility being examined, but authorities are awaiting the forensic evidence before drawing any conclusions about what happened.
