A noxious substance was thrown following an altercation between two groups of males on Saturday evening.

Three men were hospitalised and another three injured following an incident involving the throwing of a noxious substance in London on Saturday evening.

A statement released by Metropolitan Police on Saturday night revealed that police in Newham responded to an incident in Stratford in east London following an altercation between two groups of males inside Stratford Shopping Centre.

The altercation occurred shortly before 8pm on Saturday evening and in the midst of the altercation, a liquid noxious substance was thrown.

When the liquid was thrown, both groups ran from the scene, with some running into Stratford Station.

Met Police, London Ambulance Service, British Transport Police and London Fire Brigade attended the scene, where six males were injured in total.

Three men were hospitalised but none of the injuries sustained were life-threatening or life-changing.

Police arrested a 15-year-old male in Stratford on suspicion of grievous bodily harm; he has been taken to an east London police station where he currently remains.

Commenting on the incident, Chief Superintendent Ade Adelekan, Borough Commander for Newham said: “I would like to be very clear concerning this incident. What initially may have been perceived as a number of random attacks has, on closer inspection, been found to be one incident involving two groups of males.

“I recognise the lasting impact on victims of corrosive substance attacks. Our response to such attacks is continually improving through training and joint working with partners and we are working with the Home Office to explore possible restrictions around the sale of corrosive substances in conjunction with retailers and manufacturers.”

Paul Gibson, Assistant Director of Operations at London Ambulance Service said: “We were called to the incident at 2007hrs and sent a number of resources including ambulance crews, paramedics in cars and members of our hazardous area response team.

“The first of our medics arrived within 10 minutes of the first emergency call and worked closely with our colleagues from the Metropolitan Police, British Transport Police and London Fire Brigade making sure patients received the medical help they needed as quickly as possible.

“We treated a total of six patients, three of whom were taken to London hospitals.”
