O’Connor announced she had changed her name and become a Muslim on Twitter

Sinéad O’Connor has told Twitter that she has converted to Islam and will now be known as Shuhada’ Davitt.

The Irish singer, 51, wrote on the social media platform: “This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim. This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey.

“All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant. I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada’.”

She followed up the announcement by posting a number of quotes from the Koran as well as a selfie of her wearing a hijab.

The singer also posted a picture of herself standing in front of a board, with a message reading: “You have taken my body, you have taken my mind, you have taken my children but you will never take my voice.”

The announcement comes after Irish Imam Shaykh Dr Umar al-Qadri posted a video of the singer saying the Islamic declaration of faith on Thursday.

On the same day, O’Connor also wrote on Twitter: “Thank you so much to all my Muslim brothers and sisters who have been so kind as to welcome me to Ummah today on this page. You can’t begin to imagine how much your tenderness means to me.”

The ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ singer previously changed her name to Magda Davitt last year.
