Daniel Corrêa Freitas, known commonly as simply Daniel, was a 24-year-old midfielder who had played for Sao Paulo since 2015 but was recently on loan at Serie B side Sao Bento, where he had played two games.

The news of his death was confirmed on Monday by his parent club, who said in a tweet: "The Sao Paulo football club deeply regrets the death of midfielder Daniel Correa Freitas. The club sympathizes and pays condolences to the athlete’s family".

A report in a local newspaper quoted a municipal official as saying: "From the appearance of the body, it was a very violent situation. The man had two deep cuts on his neck, his head was nearly beheaded, and his genitals were severed."

"This road [where he was found] is a bit deserted and already known for the dumping of corpses. Everything indicates the man was executed here on the street and dragged for about 100 feet."
