Not a bad half-term trip…

Rishi Sunak has come under fire after his wife jetted off on a money-no-object holiday to India with their children, whilst energy giants make monstrous profits during the cost of living crisis.

The Mirror reports that Akshata Murty, 42, left her husband’s Richmond constituency in North Yorkshire with daughters Krishna, 11, nine-year-old Anoushka, and billionaire parents Naranya and Sudha, for a holiday to the paradise beaches of Goa, where temperatures are 36C.

The family enjoyed speedboat and jet-ski rides and were seen on Benaulim beach, where a seven-night full board break costs £7,500.

It comes as the Prime Minister faces widespread criticism in the UK for allowing energy giants to make record profits while Brits struggle make ends meet.

Labour MP Justin Madders stormed: “The contrast between the PM’s wife soaking up the sun in the lap of luxury and the people of the UK paying exorbitant prices to greedy energy companies couldn’t be starker.”

Gavin Sibthorpe of the GMB union, said: “Millions are struggling as a direct result of policies forcing millions of households to cut back, with bills going up and their pay down.

“Many are questioning whether they can even afford any kind of break this year.

“Rishi Sunak will never have a clue how that feels. He and his ministers are completely out of touch.”

For millions across the UK, this winter will have been one of the most difficult they’ve ever experienced, thanks to soaring inflation and skyrocketing energy bills.

At the same time, energy companies have been rolling in it.

Earlier this month, Shell and BP both announced record annual profits of £32.2bn and £23bn respectively.

And on Thursday (February 16), British Gas owners Centrica also announced record profits for the 2022 financial year.

Operating profits of £3.3bn were recorded at the company, up from £948m in 2021, and surpassing the firm’s previous highest ever yearly profit of £2.7bn, posted in 2012.

Sunak is the richest PM the UK has ever had. Together, he and his wife have a combined fortune of roughly £730m.

This has led to accusations since his ascension to the top of British politics of him being out of touch with the public.

These include Sunak travelling by jet plane to Leeds for a hospital visit, appearing to have no idea how contactless payments work, claiming his favourite McDonald’s order is something removed from the menu several years ago and forging ahead with plans for a new swimming pool at his mansion, to the tune of £400,000.
