Rishi Sunak reveals he had to be taught how to use contactless

Rishi Sunak is currently competing against Liz Truss to replace Boris Johnson

Rishi Sunak has revealed he recently had to be taught how to make a contactless payment, admitting that he “struggled” to pay by card at a petrol station earlier this year.

Earlier this year, footage of the former Chancellor attempting to pay by contactless at a garage went viral, with Sunak clearly struggling to work out how to use the technology.

Sunak, who is currently battling against Liz Truss in the race to succeed Boris Johnson as the next Prime Minister, was trying to by a can of Coca-Cola when he held his card up to the barcode scanner to try and pay.

The cashier then had to inform the Tory MP that he actually needed to touch his card on the PDQ machine below, and the barcode scanner was intended for his can of Coke.

As part of the photo op at the garage, he also filled up a Kia Rio with petrol – a vehicle that was later revealed not to be his, and actually belonged to an employee at the Sainsbury’s branch where the shoot was taking place.

Speaking at the Tory leadership hustings in Darlington on Tuesday night, Sunak admitted he had “struggled” with the contactless system and said it was “the most embarrassing thing” that’s happened to him, the Mirror reports.

“The most embarrassing thing that’s happened to me is I struggled to pay for the petrol in a car that wasn’t my own,” he said.

“Right? So I think you all know about that, right?

“And since then someone’s taught me how to use that contactless machine.

“And I tell you, it’s an amazing modern marvel this technology these days!”

It may well be that the wannabe PM is so rich that he doesn’t know how to spend money.

In July, Sunak became the first frontline politician to appear on the Sunday Times Rich list, alongside his wife Akshata Murty.

Murty is the daughter of one of India’s most successful entrepreneurs, and Sunak previously had a career as a banker.

Together, the couple have a fortune of £730m.

Also at the hustings on Tuesday, Sunak’s rival Liz Truss found herself involved in an awkward exchange with host Tom Newton Dunn after she launched a number of attacks at the supposed “leftwing” press and media.
