Appointed on 11 June 2026 for a second spell at the club, Mourinho has overseen six first-team signings and a clear-out of senior names. This is how the rebuilt Real Madrid squad is taking shape — who has arrived, who has gone, and what still needs solving before the window shuts.

Who’s in: the new Real Madrid squad additions

Mourinho has reshaped the spine of the team. The headline arrival is teenage winger Yan Diomande, a club-record capture from RB Leipzig worth up to €140m, but the depth of business is just as striking:

• Ibrahima Konaté — centre-back, a free transfer from Liverpool.
• Marc Cucurella — left-back, signed from Chelsea for a reported ~€60m.
• Bernardo Silva — midfielder, arriving on a free from Manchester City.
• Denzel Dumfries — right-back/wing-back, signed from Inter.
• Yan Diomande — winger, the club-record buy from RB Leipzig.

Add to that the return of Endrick, back in the first-team fold after his loan at Lyon, and Mourinho has fresh options in almost every line.

Who’s out: the senior clear-out

Renewal has meant hard goodbyes. Long-serving former captain Dani Carvajal was released, as were David Alaba and — following the termination of his contract — Dani Ceballos. Fran García left for Real Betis and Gonzalo García joined Fulham, while the previous year’s departures of Luka Modrić (to AC Milan) and Lucas Vázquez (to Bayer Leverkusen) had already thinned the old guard. It is a deliberate generational reset.

The unfinished business

The rebuild is not complete. Madrid’s pursuit of a defensive midfielder ended in frustration when Rodri chose Barcelona, leaving the middle of the park a lingering concern. Spanish outlet Bernabéu Digital reports Mourinho has turned his attention to strengthening at centre-back before deadline day, with the futures of fringe names still to be resolved. Expect at least one more piece of Real Madrid’s summer business before the market closes on 31 August.

There is fine-tuning to do at the margins, too. Reports in the Spanish press suggest the club are still weighing the futures of squad players such as Ferland Mendy and Eduardo Camavinga, whose situations could yet influence any late incomings. With the Rodri pursuit over, freeing budget and focus, Mourinho has the flexibility to move quickly if the right profile appears.

Even so, the shape of the project is clear. As the Guardian reported amid the summer’s many twists, this is a squad being rebuilt at pace — younger, hungrier and unmistakably Mourinho’s. Whether it ends the trophy drought is the question that will define his second Bernabéu era — and the early evidence suggests he intends to answer it in the transfer market first.
