Following Donald Trump’s calls to acquire Greenland from Denmark, now a satirical petition has been launched, where people are calling on Denmark to “buy” the US state of California from Trump.
This campaign, which is hosted on Denmarkification.com, has now passed 250,000 signatures.
It imagines a world where Denmark purchases the most populous state of America, rebrands it “New Denmark,” and even renames Disneyland as “Hans Christian Andersenland.”
The Denmarkification petition uses language deliberately echoing some of the recent statements made by Trump, as it suggests that Denmark should “play the U.S. at its own game,” arguing the country needs “more sunshine, palm trees and roller skates.”
Trump has repeatedly issued warnings about Greenland’s strategic importance, adding that the US needs the island to counter Russian influence.
The US leader also threatened to take action in Greenland, saying he will do it “whether they like it or not”.
On Saturday, in protest against the Trump administration's escalating threats, thousands of Greenlanders marched through the capital city of Nuuk.
In response, Trump has threatened to impose tariffs of 10 percent starting February 1, rising to 25 percent on June 1 on countries that oppose Washington’s bid to control Greenland, including the UK.
