People cannot believe how big Australia is

Mind blowing

With the length of time it can take to get from one part of England to another sometimes, it’s easy for us to forget that we actually live in a pretty small country.

It may take two hours to get from London to Birmingham, if you’re lucky, but the distances between major cities can be on a different scale in some countries.

Take Australia for example. Maybe it’s the fact it’s on the other side of the world, but most probably don’t quite appreciate just how big a country it is.

The country’s size is truly put into perspective with this comparison though.

In a post on Facebook, Total Nerd showed that the distance between London and Moscow, which is pretty much a journey across the length of Europe, wouldn’t even get you close to travelling from one side of Australia to the other.

Yep, Australia is pretty much the size of Europe.

The distance from London to the Russian capital according to the route in the graphic is 1,795.6 miles. But this pales in comparison to the distance from Sydney to Perth, which is more 2,444.5 miles, just under 650 miles further.

If you wanted to travel from Australia’s east coast to its west, you’re looking at roughy a five hour flight.

A five hour flight, and you’d still be in the same country.

By comparison, it takes about three and a half hours to fly from London to Moscow.

Many were left baffled by the fact, voicing their amazement in the comments.

One person wrote: “I once drove for four days and never left Queensland.”

Another said: “I have done that drive and can confirm it’s carnage.”

A third said they had forgotten “how small European countries are.”

Meanwhile, a number of Canadians were quick to point out that a coast-to-coast trip in their country is even more of a trek.

One person pointed out that the journey from St John’s on the east coast to Vancouver on the west is more than 4,300 miles.

A second had an amusing tale to tell: “Sean in Ireland called his brother Jim in Victoria BC (Canada) and told him their mother was flying to Canada and could he meet her in St Johns. Jim replied, ‘You meet her, you’re nearer!'”
