Cars are a regular part of modern day life, but there are still many parts of the great machines that we don't understand.
One of the biggest mysteries about vehicles is the black dots that are on the windscreens.
This is a feature that can be found on pretty much all cars, but what exactly are they for?
These black spots that are known as dot matrices or frits have a very important job, turns out.
They help to evenly distribute temperature across the whole windscreen, and reduces optical distortion or lensing while driving.
Autoglaze explains that "the frit band (the solid black one) heats up much faster than the windscreen's glass", which can create an "optical distortion".
This distortion "makes either straight lines look curved or bowed inwards toward the centre".
However, the black dots help to spread out the heat on the windscreen, and hence help to lessen the phenomenon.
It's not their only use, though, as they also help to keep the car attached to the windscreen.
The frits "preserve the urethane sealant used to bond the glass to the frame".
"They use the black enamel outside the windshield to block the sun’s ultraviolet rays from melting the adhesive underneath the band," the Autoglaze website says.
