“They were talking about assassinating the vice-president of America.”

New security video footage was shown in Donald Trump’s impeachment trial on Wednesday, showing just how close rioters got to Mike Pence during the US Capitol Hill riot in January.

The footage showed rioters smashing windows and doors, while police officers could be heard requesting help.

Five people died as a result of the riots.

Trump’s supporters could be heard chanting “Hang Mike Pence”, while Pence remained locked down inside the building with his family in an attempt to keep him safe.

Pence was in danger for refusing to overturn the results of an election that Donald Trump claimed was “stolen” from him and his supporters.

New footage shown at the impeachment trial showed Pence being evacuated, while it is believed that rioters got to within approximately 50 feet of the then outgoing vice president.

Nancy Pelosi was also evacuated from the building amid fears for her safety. Her office was later stormed, and her laptop was stolen.

House prosecutor Stacey Plaskett said that Trump is to blame for these attacks, and for the five subsequent deaths, and that as a result, he should be held accountable.

She said: “They did it because Donald Trump sent them on this mission.

“President Trump put a target on their backs and his mob broke into the Capitol to hunt them down… They would have killed Mike Pence if given the chance.”
