After Nepal floods tore through the Rasuwa region on the border with Tibet on Wednesday morning, thirty-three people from the UK are among hundreds which are feared missing.
According to Chinese state media, at least 160 people have been killed in Nepal and three in Tibet, after flash flooding and mudslides swept away buildings, roads and vehicles around 40 miles north of Kathmandu.
Nepal police say 579 tourists are missing, including 466 foreign nationals from 28 countries, the BBC reported.
According to analysis by the United States Geological Survey, a reported 4.4 magnitude tremor indicated “the seismic energy was instead generated by a landslide”.
Initially, an earthquake was blamed for the flooding.
Severe flooding has since been reported along the Bhote Koshi, Trishuli and Narayani rivers, and Nepalese officials have warned of “huge scale loss”.
The Foreign Office said it is working closely with Nepalese authorities “following concerning reports of British nationals who are missing”, and has urged Britons there to stay alert, the latest in a summer of Foreign Office travel warnings. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said he was “deeply concerned”.
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said he was “deeply concerned”, adding: “All my thoughts are with those affected and with British nationals in the area and their relatives here at home.”
Officials expect the death toll to rise, while search and rescue operations are continuing.
