One of the best 90s crime thrillers is among the movies on TV tonight

Simon Kelly

It has a strong 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.

After all the hype of an Oasis reunion today, we thought we’d give you a break with some options for your movies on TV tonight.

Our pick of the bunch follows the 90s theme, with one of the best crime thrillers of that decade – Carlito’s Way.

The Brian De Palma-directed flick follows the one and only Al Pacino as a Nuyorican criminal who vows to go straight and to retire in paradise.

However, as it tends to do, his criminal past proves difficult to escape, and he ends up getting dragged back into the crime game.

Sean Penn, Penelope Ann Miller, Luis Guzman, John Leguizamo and Viggo Mortensen all co-star alongside Pacino, who once again teams up with De Palma after Scarface.

While it was released to some fairly tepid reviews in 1993, Carlito’s Way has gone on to become a cult classic and is now retrospectively viewed as one of De Palma’s best projects, with particular praise going to Pacino and Penn’s performances, as well as the film’s soundtrack.

The film has also had a big cultural impact, particularly in music, as Carlito’s monologue features in songs like ‘Brooklyn’s Finest’ by Jay-Z, and Slipknot song ‘(sic)’. The flick is also mentioned in songs by The Manic Street Preachers and Lana Del Rey.

If you’re looking to catch Carlito’s Way, it’s starting on Film Four tonight at 11.05pm.

Police Academy – ITV4 – 10pm
The beloved 80s cop comedy that spawned six sequels.
