Mindhunter star Holt McCallany reveals that the show might return for a third season on the streaming platform Netflix.
Fans of the thriller series have long given up on the idea of a potential third season, with season 2 airing six years ago.
However, in a recent interview with CBR promoting his new show The Waterfront, Mindhunter's Holt McCallany revealed that the show might make a return as director David Fincher's interest increases:
"So look, you know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it's just a chance. I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.
"And I felt very fortunate and privileged to have gotten to do that show at all. I would love it if it were to return. I think, like I said, you know, he gave me a little bit of hope when I had that meeting with him, but the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align. The good news is that we're at Netflix with The Waterfront, and those movies would also be for Netflix. So I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out, but it has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material. And, you know, that's a big question mark."
Over the years, many people have shared their opinions as to why the iconic show called it quits after just two seasons. Some claim that Fincher just wasn't interested in continuing the series, others argue that it had little to do with the show's director, but rather with Netflix wanting to cut costs.
However, given that the streaming platform now spends billions on content yearly, that excuse no longer seems to hold up.
So all fingers point to Fincher. The director has had a jam-packed schedule since Mindhunter aired six years ago, working on other Netflix projects such as Mank and The Killer.
As of recent, he's also taken on a high-profile Once Upon a Time in America sequel, taking over from the one and only Quentin Tarantino.
The idea that 'season three' would consist of three two-hour movies, is something fans have to get used to as the first two seasons consisted of 10 and 9 episodes, respectively. However, it seems to be suggested this is something fans would be willing to compromise on, as long as it means a return to the beloved series.
Even though a third season still seems a long shot, it's more information and perspective on the Mindhunter franchise than fans have had prior, and hopefully, there's more news to follow soon.
