Manchester United legend Mark Hughes has revealed that his son Alex has suddenly passed away, leaving him and his family “heartbroken”.
The Welsh manager and former player said that his son, Alex Hughes, has died aged 38.
He was Grimsby’s player recruitment lead, as he previously held roles at clubs including Manchester City, Fulham, Blackburn and 1860 Munich.
“Jill and I are totally heartbroken by the sudden and unexpected loss of our beloved son Alex”, Mark Hughes said in a statement released via the League Managers Association.
“Alex was a wonderful son, brother to Curtis and Xenna, devoted husband and father to Jessica and their two beautiful children Sebastian and Leonardo”, the former City, Stoke and Blackburn manager added.
“Alex was Player Recruitment Lead at Grimsby Town FC, and had many good friends and colleagues. He will be so deeply missed by us all. We ask for privacy during this sad time as we come to terms with our family’s loss”, the statement added.
The LMA sent its deepest condolences “to all of Alex’s family and friends”.
Meanwhile, Grimsby Town released a statement in which they said that they are “devastated to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of our Player Recruitment Lead, Alex Hughes.”
Before joining Blackburn in 2007, where he worked as a performance analyst during the time his father was a manager, Alex Hughes had a brief playing career at Stockport and Wrexham.
In 2008, he followed his dad Mark to Manchester City and worked with him again at Fulham.
He then moved abroad, prior to joining Grimsby last year.
His dad had an illustrious playing career at Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
