The man was pronounced dead when emergency services arrived at the scene
An Australian man has died after having his leg cut off with a buzzsaw by another man in what police suspect may have been an "arrangement" between the two.
News.com.au reports that the two men, aged 36 and 66, already knew each other and had driven to meet at Fitzgerald Park in Innisfail, Australia, where they sat under a tree at 3.38am on Saturday (February 19).
It was around 20 minutes later that the true reason for the meeting became apparent.
Police say the 36-year-old used a circular buzzsaw to cut off the 66-year-old's leg below the knee.
He then helped the man back to a car before he fled the scene on foot. He is said to have used the older man's own saw to perform the operation.
Eventually, the 66-year-old was found by passers-by but was pronounced dead when emergency services arrived at the scene.
The next day, the 33-year-old was charged with murder and will appear in court on Monday February 21.
Police are not sure how the two men knew each other.
“Police also believe there was an arrangement between the two people for the amputation of the leg,” Detective Acting Inspector Gary Hunter said.
“During my 34 years as a police officer, I’ve never experienced a situation as we are presented with here.”
Police could provide no additional details about why the two men met up and could not confirm whether drugs were involved.
They are appealing for anyone with information about the incident or dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward.
