The capital's mayor Sadiq Khan thanked the ambulance service, fire brigade and police for their "swift action" and Dianne Abbot, the MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, shared her concern on social media following hearing the news:
A mental health worker and therapist named Hal from Stratford was on the mezzanine floor when it collapsed and managed to escape with a few scratches.
Speaking to BBC reporters, he said that the majority of the crowd within the bar had gathered after a local football match between Clapton CFC and Stonewall FC.
The bar itself shared a message on Instagram saying "Our thoughts are with everyone that has been affected." https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ42vAUo6-y/He described the moment as sounding "like a rumbling - a bit like an earthquake", adding, "you can't be prepared for anything like this" and that everyone "helped each other out".
Another witness said: "There was just this sort of cracking sort of noise and dust started coming down. Me and my friend just ran to the side and the whole thing just came down in a matter of seconds."
London Ambulance Service are treating the collapse as a major incident.
