Why the Leeds United goal appeal has been submitted

The 34th-minute goal was the middle act of a first half that blew the game open.

James Justin swung a cross into the box, Calvert-Lewin and Bogle both rose to meet it, and the ball ended up in the Newcastle net.

Calvert-Lewin appeared to make first contact, but replays suggested the ball then deflected off a second head on its way in, and that head is believed to have been Bogle's.

The Premier League Match Centre settled it during the game, posting on X: "The goal accreditation panel has adjudged Leeds' 34th minute goal as a Bogle goal."

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the Whites want the moment looked at again and have submitted an appeal to the Premier League's Goal Accreditation Panel.

That panel is a three-person group drawn from the Premier League Match Centre.

When the identity of a scorer is genuinely in dispute, it reviews the incident and rules on the final point of contact, the key phrase, and the reason Calvert-Lewin's initial touch has not been enough on its own.

The panels are usually made up of a Pro Ref representative, as well as two football experts.

For a centre-forward, these things matter more than the shrug they get from the outside.

Goal tallies shape contract talks, Golden Boot races and the way a striker's season is judged in March, and Calvert-Lewin has started life at Elland Road well enough that the difference between one goal and two is worth an email to the Premier League.

Bogle, for what it is worth, was not short of reward on the night either as the right-back also created and finished a goal of his own in first-half stoppage time, and he was named in WhoScored's Premier League Team of the Week for the performance.

A night that barely needed the argument

The dispute is a footnote to what was comfortably Leeds' most complete display of the season.

A Lewis Miley own goal around the half-hour mark opened the scoring, the contested header followed four minutes later, and Bogle's solo effort made it three inside 14 first-half minutes.

Noah Okafor added a fourth on the half-volley just after the hour to finish the job.

It was Daniel Farke's first home win of the campaign and it lifted Leeds to third in the Premier League, a position nobody at Elland Road would have written down in August, and one that comes a week after the chastening 6-3 Carabao Cup exit at Chelsea.

Calvert-Lewin, for his part, had already given his own take on the goal in the aftermath, as we covered in our piece on his reaction to the decision.

Leeds had a separate grievance from the night too. Inside the opening two minutes, a half-cleared corner struck the arm of Matias Fernandez-Pardo inside the Newcastle box, and referee Michael Salisbury waved away loud claims from both the players and the crowd.

The Premier League Match Centre later confirmed that "the referee's call of no penalty for a potential handball offence by Fernandez-Pardo was checked and confirmed by VAR". Four goals later, it hardly mattered.

Palace next at Elland Road

There is no time to dwell on any of it. Crystal Palace visit Elland Road on Sunday, Leeds' second home game of the week, and Farke's side appear to have come through the Newcastle win without fresh injury problems.

Pierre Sage's Palace arrive in rather worse shape, having lost three of their first four league games and with striker Jean-Philippe Mateta not expected back until after the international break.

Whether the goal ends up next to Calvert-Lewin's name or Bogle's, the scoreline is not up for appeal. Marching on together.
