Derek remains in hospital with serious health problems

Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway has shared a picture of her husband Derek in hospital after he became seriously ill with Covid-19 in March last year.

Derek Draper, 53, has been free of the disease since last summer but is still fighting for his life after contracting the virus during the first wave.

During the trailer for ITV’s new documentary Finding Derek, Kate opens up about her traumatic journey over the past year.

Looking directly at the camera, Kate says: “Derek is the sickest person the team of doctors have treated this year.

“Is he going to be able to come back or will he be alive but no longer the person he was?”

The screen begins to blackout as a message says: “One year later, Derek is still in hospital.”

A spokesperson for ITV said: “As Kate lays bare in the film, her family, along with many others who have suffered the effects of the virus, is now facing the reality of adjusting to a very different way of life to the one they lived before the pandemic hit.”

As a result of his long battle against the virus, Derek has suffered extensive damage to his body. He was put into a coma in April last year in attempt to help his body fight the deadly virus.

The former Labour Party advisor has suffered from kidney failure, heart failure and liver damage. Derek is said to have holes in his lungs from the bacterial pneumonia. He has also lost approximately 8 stone in weight since March last year.

Derek and Kate have two children, Darcey and Billy, who reside with Kate as Derek remains in hospital with serious health problems.
