Jane McDonald has spoken out after ITV confirmed she would step in for Phillip Schofield as host of the British Soap Awards this Saturday.

Last week, Schofield released a statement in which he revealed he had lied about having a relationship with a younger colleague on This Morning whilst he was married to his then-wife Stephanie Lowe.

He announced he had resigned from ITV and was dropped by his management company shortly after.

After he stepped down from This Morning, the 61-year-old had assured fans he would see them again when he hosted the British Soap Awards on ITV this weekend.

But following his admission of the affair, he resigned from the broadcaster altogether.

On Thursday, ITV confirmed Jane McDonald would replace Schofield as host of the awards show.

In a statement organisers of the British Soap Awards said: “We’re pleased to announce our host for The British Soap Awards 2023…the fabulous Jane McDonald! As a super huge soap fan she’s in for a treat as we celebrate all our wonderful soaps in a star studded glittering event that airs this Tuesday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.”

The 60-year-old is best known for her TV series ‘Cruising with Jane McDonald’ and her appearances on ITV show ‘Loose Women.’

In a statement on social media, the much-loved presenter said: “I’m so excited to be this years host for The British Soap Awards!! I LOVE my soaps, so this is just a dream come true.

“I can’t wait to see all our wonderful soap nominees and celebrate all their hard work with them – roll on the awards! Tuesday, 8pm, @ITV & @ITVX.”

Fans were ecstatic to learn that the Wakefield-born presenter will be hosting the show, with one person commenting:  “Oh Jane you are the perfect choice; I seriously can’t wait.”

Another said: “OMG that’s simply just the best news ever congratulations to @TheJaneMcDonald wow I’m definitely not going to miss that.”

And a third added: “Oooh I’m so excited for you and you will be incredible. The viewing figures are going to go through the roof. Keep calm and remember to breath. Lots of Love Mary xx.”
