A petition calling on the British government to legalise marijuana has reached over 150,000 signatures, forcing parliament to consider a debate on the issue.
The petition itself — which has over 50,000 signatures more than it needed — claims that the drug is safer than alcohol and legalising it ‘could bring in £900m in taxes every year, save £400m on policing cannabis. and create over 10,000 new jobs.’
Many think it is high time that cannabis be legalised, saying that much of the negativity towards weed stems from the lies of previous generations.
But what does this petition mean for the legalisation of weed in the UK? To be blunt, it doesn’t guarantee anything.
The Tories and Labour are not exactly best buds, and any new legislation would likely require a joint effort from both. This makes it a rather unlikely scenario as neither looks particularly keen to blaze a trail on this issue.
