High school girls team forfeits tournament rather than playing against transgender player

The school argues it was unsafe and unfair to play against a team with a transgender player

A Christian high school girls team has forfeited a tournament in protest against a team having a transgender player on its roster.

Mid Vermont Christian School (MVCS) was set to play Long Trail School on February 21 in an out-of-state basketball tournament, but forfeited the game due to the inclusion of transgender player on Long Trail’s roster, according to the school head, Vicky Fogg.

Fogg claimed it was both unfair and unsafe for the girls team to play against a transgender girl on the opposing team.

In a statement to Fox News, Fogg said: “We withdrew from the tournament because we believe playing against an opponent with a biological male jeopardizes the fairness of the game and the safety of our players.”

“Allowing biological males to participate in women’s sports sets a bad precedent for the future of women’s sports in general.”

Long Trail progressed to the next round of the tournament as a result.

The decision goes against state law in Vermont, which permits transgender females to play in girls sporting leagues and prohibits discrimination based upon gender identity.

“Transgender and gender nonconforming students are to be provided the same opportunities to participate in physical education as are all other students,” the Vermont Agency of Education’s best practices explains.

“Participation in competitive athletic activities and sports will be resolved on a case-by-case basis.”
