Hundreds of schools across the country will remain closed today due to snow and ice disruption after the Met Office issued multiple weather warnings.
Amber weather warnings remain in place for snow in parts of Scotland, forecasting heavy snow as well as travel disruption, while yellow warnings for snow and ice cover large parts of the UK.
Disruptive wind, rain, and snow will continue to hit parts of southern England this week, as an Atlantic low-pressure front meets an Arctic airmass over the country.
The Met Office said that some southern areas may also see snow on Thursday and Friday, while northern and central parts of England could experience heavier snowfall, along with rain and strong winds, depending on the track of an approaching Atlantic low-pressure system.
Hundreds of schools will therefore remain closed today (Tuesday, January 6), mainly in Wales and Scotland, where snow and ice have caused severe travel disruptions.
Aberdeenshire Council and Orkney Islands Council have confirmed that all schools and nurseries will be closed on Tuesday.
The University of the Highlands and Islands in Kirkwall will also remain closed until conditions improve.
Then, in Northern Ireland, dozens of schools will also remain closed due to icy and snowy conditions across the country.
Yesterday, the weather caused travel disruption at airports in Manchester, Liverpool, Aberdeen, and Inverness.
The forecaster is predicting further 'frequent' spells of 'heavy' snow in parts of Scotland, covering Aberdeen, Aviemore in the Cairngorms, and Ullapool, Ross-shire.
The Met Office said rain will turn to snow across Scotland and northern England on Tuesday, with 1–5 cm expected in northern England and as much as 10–15 cm in central and eastern Scotland.
Two amber snow warnings are in force across northern parts of Scotland until Tuesday evening, while yellow snow and ice warnings cover southwest England, northern England, eastern England and Wales.
A yellow ice warning is in place in Northern Ireland.
The Met Office has warned that heavy snow and freezing temperatures could leave rural communities at risk of being cut off, with mobile phone coverage also potentially affected. It added that road, rail and air travel may be disrupted, as public transport services could be cancelled.
The best way to check whether your school is affected by the weather is to visit your local council’s website or contact your school directly.
