Man hit with fine for having a cup of tea with his friend

Rules are rules

Unless you’ve spent the last week or so living under a rock, you’re probably more than well aware that England is now in the grips of Lockdown 2.0.

Although there’s been understandable confusion surrounding some of the many, many rules as to what people can and can’t do as the country tries to limit the spread of coronavirus, most should now have a fair idea that nipping round your mate’s for a brew is not permitted.

Sadly, that wasn’t enough to deter one man from doing exactly that on Friday.

Police in Wigan Borough confirmed that officers in the Golborne and Lowton neighbourhood had issued a fine to a man for breaking lockdown restrictions to have a cup of tea with a friend.

Apart from support bubble exemptions and child care support, visiting another person’s address is currently not permitted – no matter how much you crave a cup of tea.

A Facebook post from the police said: ‘As a follow on from yesterday’s post reminding you we are currently in Lockdown 2.0 as they say and under Government restrictions, a fixed penalty was issued to a male who decided he was going to see his mate and have a brew with him, and to make matters worse he tried to lie about why he was there.’

New lockdown restrictions came into force across England on Thursday and are due to last a month as the government looks to stem the rise in new cases.
