Eva Mendes may be a vibrant presence on Instagram, but she has a very valid reason for keeping her family life private.
The actress began dating Ryan Gosling in 2011 and they have welcomed two daughters together; Esmeralda Amada, born in 2014, and Amada Lee, born in 2016.
The couple keep their relationship very private, with Eva only confirming the pair were husband and wife in 2022 after many speculated on their status.
Mendes spoke to The Sunday Times about how she parents her kids, who are reportedly homeschooled and not allowed phones.
“I still have all this anxiety and I see myself passing it on to my children,” she said. “Subconsciously, I can’t imagine what they’re inheriting from me that I don’t want them to inherit from me.
“Putting my kid on the internet and being like, ‘Oh, search something’, that to me is equivalent to telling her, ‘Oh, just go down the street in the middle of the night. You’ll be fine.’
“I know that sounds extreme, but that’s what I feel."
She continued: “I explain to them what I didn’t have, what Ryan didn’t have when he was little, how hard we had to fight, the dark days of being paycheque to paycheque, and this and that, but they’ll never really know unless they experience that."
During the pandemic, the actress explained to her followers, who were keen to know why she kept her family offline, and why she has decided to keep her social media and family separate.
“I have always had a clear boundary when it comes to my man and my kids. I’ll talk about them of course, with limits, but I won’t post pictures of our daily life," Eva explained.
“And since my children are still so little and don’t understand what posting their image really means, I don’t have their consent.
"And I won’t post their image until they’re old enough to give me consent. As far as Ryan and I, it just works for us this way, to stay private.”
However, while the couple may not put their children online, they do from time to time, share insights into their relationship.
For example, during Ryan's Oscars performance of 'I'm Just Ken', Eva shared a sweet tribute to her husband online.
Dressed in a pink blazer and a cowboy hat, she wrote: "You took Ken all the way to the Oscar’s, RG.
"Now come home, we need to put the kids to bed," she wrote.
Following the iconic performance, Ryan kissed a Barbie-themed 'E' charm necklace, which stands for Eva.
