The government of Donald Trump is set to recognise only two genders: male and female.
The move will come as one of many new executive orders the new president will sign upon returning to The White House.
It is one of two orders branded as "common sense", resulting in the end of all federal funding or recognition of gender identities.
The definition of male and female is to be based on whether people are born with eggs or sperm, rather than on chromosomes.
Officials also stated that the order would impact documents such as passports.
Requirements at government facilities and at workplaces that transgender people being referred to using pronouns that align with their gender are also set to be blocked through the order.
Mr Trump's team say the requirements violate the First Amendment's freedom of speech and religion.
