“I wouldn’t have done that,” Trump said when asked about the suspects’ release. 

He also suggested they “might be” connected to Iran, adding that he knew the answer but did not want to reveal what he described as specific information.

The five British men, who are aged between 23 and 25 and live in the London area, were arrested early on Sunday near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.

The base has been used by US B-1 bombers carrying out missions against Iran.

Police are examining 'every possible angle' after the arrests

The arrests followed reports of three “suspicious” white vans near the airbase. Police detained the men on suspicion of explosives offences and preparing a terrorist act under UK counter-terrorism laws.

All five were released on bail on Monday, with Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of Counter Terrorism Policing, stressing that this does not mean the investigation has ended. 

He said officers are examining “every possible angle”, including whether the suspects could have been acting as proxies for a foreign state, either knowingly or unknowingly. They will also face “stringent” bail conditions.

Iran has denied any involvement in the alleged plot.

The arrests have come at a particularly sensitive time because of the base’s role in US operations against Iran. 

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has called an emergency meeting of senior officials to ensure the Government has “the full picture”.
