A judge has handed a dog walker killer an indefinite hospital order after he stabbed Wayne Broadhurst, 49, to death during a knife rampage in Uxbridge last October.
Dawood Safi, a 28-year-old Afghan migrant, admitted the manslaughter of Broadhurst at Southwark Crown Court.
Safi stabbed Broadhurst at least 14 times as he walked his dog in the street.
The attack formed part of a wider spree on 27 October last year, when Safi first attacked his landlord, Shahzad Farrukh, inside his Uxbridge home.
The 28-year-old then killed Broadhurst outside, before stabbing a 14-year-old boy nearby.
Mrs Justice Cutts handed down the sentencing at Southwark Crown Court.
She said Safi had suffered paranoid delusions and heard voices during the attack, and recommended he be deported once his treatment ends.
The final decision, she noted, rests with the Home Secretary.
The judge told Safi: "Wayne Broadhurst, a gentle and quiet man, had the misfortune to be walking his dog at the time.
"As he emerged from the alleyway on to the street, you set upon and killed him in a frenzied, random, and completely unprovoked assault involving stabbing him at least 14 times."
Wayne Broadhurst's partner, Ann Newman, said in a victim impact statement that her "future" had been "stolen" from her.
She now faces a daily battle with grief, she told the court.
Wayne Broadhurst, an Ealing Council street cleaner, was described as "a gentle and quiet man".
The judge called Broadhurst hard-working and deeply loved by his family.
Neighbours in Hillingdon knew him for his daily dog walks, and his death has shocked the community.
Dawood Safi, 28, is an Afghan asylum seeker born in Kapisa province, near Kabul.
He arrived in the UK hidden in a lorry in November 2020, initially telling authorities he was 17, rather than his real age of 22, to strengthen his asylum claim.
Despite taking Broadhurst's life, Safi won't automatically be deported.
Mrs Justice Cutts recommended deportation once Safi's hospital treatment ends, but under UK law that decision belongs to the Home Secretary rather than the courts.
