DC chairman confirms discussions over DC and Marvel crossover movies

The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy director is now in charge of DC Studios

Based on the concept of alternative universes, as part of this, previously thought separate X-Men characters and previous iterations of Spider-Man have been able to appear alongside their Marvel counterparts in MCU projects, much to the delight of superhero fans. That being said, some other bigger crossover ideas, such as between the Marvel and DC universes, have not been realised in cinema yet.

In the case of Marvel and DC, a crossover would prove difficult given that the two are owned by rival entertainment companies - Disney and Warner Bros.

That said, it is looking more likely that such a crossover could happen now thanks to filmmaker James Gunn. Having directed Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, the writer and director was recently hired as co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios.

While promoting the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn was quizzed by the movie magazine Empire as to the chances of DC and Marvel heroes sharing the screen together.

He responded: “I’m certain that’s more likely now that I’m in charge [at DC]. Who knows?

"Just don’t expect anything on that front in the immediate future. That’s many years away, though. I think we have to establish what we’re doing [at DC] first.

"I would be lying to say that we haven’t discussed it. But all discussions have been very, very light and fun.”

Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 lands in Irish cinemas on 5 May and will see the titular team, led by Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), adjusting to life on the space station Knowhere as a threat from the past of Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) resurfaces.

As such, Quill must lead the Guardians on a dangerous mission to protect Rocket, a quest that "could lead to the team dissolving".

Gunn has previously stated that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the "last time people will see this team of Guardians".

“This is the end for us... I just want to be true to the characters, the story and give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story," he told the Hero Nation podcast.

"That’s always a little bit scary; I’m doing my best. I’m aware that the third film in most trilogies sucks; not always."
