Jet ski tragedy claims champion's life

Jeremy Paynter, 45, was enjoying a trip in Alcudia with his partner, Emily Hill, when the incident happened. 

The pair were sitting on a stationary jet ski, both wearing life jackets, when it suddenly tipped over, throwing them into the sea.

During an opening inquest at Oakwood House in Maidstone, Coroner Patricia Harding said: “The information before the court is that he was on a jet ski trip, on a stationary jet ski with his partner, wearing life jackets, when it tipped and they fell into the water.”

The hearing was told that Paynter managed to help his partner get back onto the jet ski, but was unable to climb back on himself.

He was eventually pulled from the water onto nearby rocks as an air ambulance was sent to the scene. 

Despite repeated attempts by emergency services to save him, he could not be revived.

His cause of death was officially recorded as asphyxia.

Following the tragedy, heartfelt tributes have been shared by family, friends and former colleagues, who remembered him as a devoted father whose kindness and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

His ex-wife, Cathrine Spencer, a former England rugby player, paid tribute on LinkedIn, writing: “Jeremy was an incredible Dad to our amazing daughter.”

“Jeremy was larger than life in every way. He made such an incredible, positive impact on everyone he met.”

“I hope that he is looking down now and finally understands how much he is loved by so many people.”
