Coronation Street and Indiana Jones actor Michael Byrne dies aged 82

He had a long acting career

Byrne had a long career in acting, playing a number of roles across film and TV.

He was perhaps best known for his roles in Coronation Street as Gail Platt's long lost father Ted Page as well as Colonel Vogel in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

He was written out of Coronation Street in 2021 after appearing on the soap between 2008 and 2010.

Byrne also appeared in another iconic film series, acting alongside Sean Connery in James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies and appearing in Braveheart.

Byrne started his career on stage in the 1960s, appearing in productions alongside Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens in the Shaffer’s The Royal Hunt of the Sun and Pinero’s Trelawny of the Wells.

He continued to appear in big-name films, including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 as powerful wizard Gellert Grindelwald.

His other film credits include Apt Pupil, The Eagle Has Landed, A Bridge Too Far, The Medusa Touch, The Saint, The Sum of All Fears and Gangs of New York.

Byrne was also a regular supporting actor in TV shows including Casualty, a Touch of Frost and Sharpe.

He is survived by his former wife Carole, two daughters and three grandchildren.
