Conor McGregor has spoken publicly for the first time after being arrested in the early hours of Monday morning for allegedly smashing the phone of a fan who was trying to take a photograph of him.

McGregor was charged by Miami police with strong-armed robbery and misdemeanor criminal mischief after the alleged incident at approximately 5am on Monday morning.

He was subsequently taken into custody, before posting bond and leaving jail in Miami-Dade county.

On Tuesday morning, the Irish MMA fighter took to Instagram for the first time since the arrest, thanking his fans and admitting that he will continue to work on his patience.

“Patience in this world is a virtue I continue to work on. I love my fans dearly. Thank you all,” said McGregor, with a post accompanied by a photograph of him leaving the jail.

McGregor’s Miami defence lawyer Samuel Rabin confirmed that McGregor “was involved in a minor altercation involving a cell phone that resulted in a call to law enforcement. Mr McGregor appreciates the response of law enforcement and pledges his full cooperation”.

According to a police report, the fan, believed to be a 22-year-old from Slough, was attempting to take a photograph of the MMA fighter when he “slapped the victim’s phone out of his hand, causing it to fall to the floor”.

The report also states that surveillance video captured the moment, which happened when McGregor and the fan were leaving the  Fontainebleau Hotel.
