Several people, including children, have been stabbed in an attack in a park near Lake Annecy, in France's south-east.
Interior minister Gerard Darmanin said the attacker had been arrested, "due to the swift intervention of police".
Six children were injured in the stabbing, AFP news agency reported.
Local media, BFM TV reported the victims were around three years old.
A British girl, three, was among the victims when suspect H Abdalmasih launched an attack on Thursday morning.
Four children and two adults were seriously injured when the 32-year-old targeted his young victims "indiscriminately" in a playground.
Three of the victims, including the British girl, are said to be in a life-threatening condition in hospital, with the youngest confirmed to be just 22 months old.
Regional deputy Antoine Armand described the attack as "abominable" and said authorities were investigating.
The French prime minister, Elisabeth Borne, is said to be on her way to the scene.
