The Home Office confirmed the arrival, describing it as a stark illustration of the “reckless and dangerous tactics” used by people-smuggling gangs.

The figure breaks the previous record of 165 people on one boat, set only last month.

Smugglers have increasingly crammed more passengers onto fewer, larger “mega dinghies” to evade French patrols, a shift that has heightened concern about safety at sea and the politics of small-boat crossings.

Earlier this month a dinghy caught fire and capsized after leaving France, one of a string of incidents in which a migrant boat caught fire in the Channel.

Overall numbers are falling even as individual boats grow more crowded.

Between 1 January and 3 August 2026, a total of 14,561 people made the crossing, a 43% drop on the same period the previous year, according to figures BBC News reported.

Nearly all of those who arrive by small boat go on to claim asylum.

"This latest incident demonstrates the reckless and dangerous tactics employed by criminal gangs… who continue to put lives at risk by cramming ever greater numbers of people onto unseaworthy vessels."

That was the response from a Home Office spokesperson to the record crossing, which the Independent reported arrived after leaving France overnight.

The scale of the single boat is likely to intensify pressure on ministers over how to stop the gangs while keeping those on board safe.
