A history of safety incidents at the Cardiff Half Marathon

Cardiff Half Marathon organisers have confirmed a runner died after Sunday's race, praising medical teams who responded, but will release no further details out of respect for the family.

Run4Wales confirmed the participants death on Monday, being the 23rd year the event has taken place, with about 30,000 people on the 13.1 mile (21.1 km) course in this edition.

Organisers thanked event and hospital medical teams for responding with "great speed and professionalism", according to a report by BBC Wales.

The organisers sent condolences to the runner's family and friends, with no further details released "in respect of the family's wishes", they said.

Sunday's death follows two previous fatalities linked to the race.

Stephen Jenkins, 37, who collapsed near the finish line in 2024 and later died in hospital.

Ben McDonald, 25, and Dean Fletcher, 32, each suffered fatal cardiac arrests minutes apart during 2019's edition.

Wales' biggest mass-participation event

The event is Wales' largest mass-participation fundraiser, raising more than £4m for charity each year.

It also ranks as the UK's second-biggest half marathon and belongs to the SuperHalfs series, a global group of leading half marathons including Valencia, Lisbon, Prague, Berlin and Copenhagen.

World Athletics has given the Cardiff Half Marathon an Elite Race Label.
