British tourist dies in horror parasailing accident in holiday hotspot

A police investigation has been launched.

An unnamed, 66-year-old woman was parasailing with her husband in the Cola del Caballo mountain area of Benidorm when the incident happened, around 6:50pm local time yesterday, according to La Vanguardia.

As per the Mirror, the couple went out to sea despite yellow flag weather conditions in place.

Spanish outlets reported that the woman was in the air when she smashed into rocks following a gust of strong wind, causing the line connecting the parachute canopy and the towing boat to break.

Local news outlet Ahora Marina Baixa reported that the two people participating in the activity "fell from a great height".

La Vanguardia reported that the woman had gone into cardiac arrest and was taken to Benidorm Port, but efforts to revive her were unsuccessful, being pronounced dead at the scene.

Her husband is believed to have suffered injuries including broken ribs and was said to be "walking wounded", the Mirror reports.

It is not yet clear what his nationality is.

Some footage has been circulating online, claiming to show the moments leading up to the tragic accident.

A police investigation into the incident has been launched and is ongoing.
