Baby’s birth helped bring man out of coma after his heart stopped for 2 hours

Father-to-be woke-up from a coma after suffering from a heart attack

The story unfolds as such. 

The couple were enjoying an evening out celebrating Emma’s, Sam’s wife, last day of work before maternity leave.

“It was just a completely normal evening,” said Sam on This Morning. “We just went to bed completely normally, and then, that’s the last of it I really remember.”

While scrolling on her phone, Emma noticed Sam struggling breathing for air.

“He’s, like, gasping for breath, like, three huge gasps, and then his eyes go to the back of his head.”

The then 39 week pregnant woman called an ambulance and preceded to perform CPR for 15 minutes straight.

First responders worked on Sam’s barely beating heart for two hours.

Sam says his heart “wasn’t producing a pulse or any kind of blood pressure, but it was still there, there was something going on.”

“That’s one of the reasons they didn’t call it,” he said quite bluntly. “They would have called if it wasn’t for that.”

Upon arriving at the hospital, the doctors told Emma that Sam was in a coma and “probably the third or fourth sickest person in the country.”

Three days later, while staying at a hotel near the hospital, Emma went into labor around 4 in the morning. 

“Because I was so pregnant I just had to stay calm because I didn’t want anything to obviously happen to Sophie,” she said.

Four hours later, Sophie was born. 

“I gave birth in the same hospital. We all had, like, matching wristbands which we thought was cute,” Emma said.

Sophie was brought in to meet her father. However, Sam was unresponsive with his eyes wide open. 

“The midwife literally just lifted her in front of his eyes,” Emma said. “You could see tears coming down the side of his eyes. It was the craziest experience of my life.”

Despite not remembering meeting his daughter fully, Sam described it as “almost like a dream.”

Sam left the hospital with broken ribs from the CPR, as well as a defibrillator, in case anything were to happen. 

However, the young father is now back to playing sports and is feeling “normal”.

In the meantime, the couple are undergoing genetic tests while Sam is wearing a heart monitor to try to diagnose why his heart stopped in the first place, which he says is “more for Sophie”.
