Asda to sell pints of beer

The supermarket is trialling sales of draught beer

Asda customers will soon be able to buy pints of beer at the supermarket as part of an experiment.

At one of its stores in Milton Keynes, Asda has started selling refillable one and two litre containers of beer and cider.

There will be 12 different types for people to choose from including a Pornstar Martini IPA from Redchurch Brewery and Chew Chew Salted Caramel Milkstout from Fallen Brewing.

There are also no or low alcohol options on tap.

So now for the all important question – how much will it cost?

Well, a litre of beer or cider will cost from £5.90 to £8.20. Therefore half a litre would be between  £2.95 to £4.10. Reminder that a pint is 568ml.

Staff at the supermarket will use proper beer pumps to pour drinks into refillable glass containers that they can use and keep to refill again.

The logic behind the trial is all about helping recycling and sustainability, along with smaller, local breweries.

Asda has already had similar refillable schemes for dry goods, such as pasta, grains and rice.

Asda senior Director of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships Matt Harrison said: “The refillable element of the trial gives customers the chance to pick up a new tipple and make a small change to help them shop more sustainably in our Milton Keynes store.”

The Mirror reports that the supermarket has teamed up with a company called Craft on Draft to run the trial.

Craft on Draft co-founder Craig Bell added: “We’re passionate about craft beers and ciders and aim to showcase the best small batch brews to bring something new and different to Asda customers.

“Although if they want to try them they’ll need to be quick, as there will be a limited number of serves available and once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

If the trial is successful in Milton Keynes, then Asda plan to roll out the scheme to more stores across the country next year.

The pumps will be located at the end of the aisles in the alcohol section in the store.
