An armed man has been shot by the Secret Service near to the White House, according to the agency.
The incident happened just after midnight on Sunday after an 'armed confrontation' with law enforcement.
The confrontation happened near the intersection of 17th Street and F Street NW - less than a five-minute walk from the White House.
Local police had reported that a 'suicidal individual' was possibly travelling to Washington DC from Indiana.
The man's vehicle was found by Secret Service officers who spotted a person on foot who matched the description that local police had given them.
In a statement on X posted by spokesperson Anthony Guiglielmi, the Secret Service said: "As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm, and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel."
He has been transported to hospital but his condition is unknown.
The Secret Service's statement said that no injuries were reported among its personnel, and that the incident was under investigation.
Donald Trump was not in the White House at the time of the incident, as he was visiting his Florida home Mar-a-Lago this weekend.
