Did anyone honestly think that this referendum talk would disappear over night? Nah, neither did we.
And rightly so – it’s one of the biggest decisions our country has faced in generations. So with that in mind, it’s no surprise that many people aren’t happy with the outcome of Thursday’s vote.
On Friday the country awoke (if they’d not stayed up to watch it on TV) to the news that the majority of people that voted wanted Britain to leave the EU. Since the confirmation of the result, it’s safe to say that many of those in the Remain camp haven’t taken it too well.
In response, more than half a million people have now signed a parliamentary petition calling for another referendum of the UK’s membership of the EU. The sheer volume of people trying to access it even cause the official petition website to briefly crash, reports ITV.
On Saturday morning, the number of signatures on the petition was well on its way to attracting one million signatures – greatly exceeding the number required to have it formally considered for a parliamentary debate.
“We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the Remain or Leave vote is less than 60% based on a turnout less than 75%, there should be another referendum,” states the petition, set up by William Oliver Healey.
A 51.9% majority of voters opted to leave the EU, a result which later saw David Cameron indicate that he would not continue in his role as Prime Minister.
