The Daily Mail journalist insisted Brexit had nothing to do with the disruption
Andrew Pierce received a very public schooling over the Dover Port chaos after he insisted that the disruption had nothing to do with Brexit.
Passengers were forced to wait for several hours on Friday as bumper-to-bumper traffic stretching for miles marred the journeys of tens of thousands of families at the start of the school summer holidays.
Lorries were also forced to queue for up to 18 hours to make it through to the busy crossing.
Commenting on queues that plagued the big getaway, Pierce argued that the Daily Mail's position on the situation was that the French were to blame for not adequately staffing passport booths.
But travel journalist Simon Calder had a different view, and calmly explained why misconceptions that we had the same controls in place before Brexit were way off the mark.
He said: "I'm afraid, Andrew Pierce, you have got exactly what you wanted, which is the effects of Brexit which gives back control to the French.
"We want to be treated as third country citizens, that means that instead of just waving the passport out of the window when you breaze past, the French official has to ask to see your passport, they have to stamp it and they are supposed to check that you haven't had too many journeys to the European Union.
"They need to ask whether you have enough money for your stay, whether you have a return ticket.
"These are all rules that we helped devise and build in."
