Matt Tate

Adam Johnson has had his 12 England caps officially removed, according to his defence team.

The former Sunderland footballer was sentenced to six years in prison after he was found guilty of one count of engaging in sexual activity with a child and pleaded guilty to a similar charge and another of grooming.

Johnson played for his country 12 times, his last appearance being in 2012, but reports from court confirm that he been stripped of all caps following his child sex offence conviction.

The 28-year-old has lodged a formal appeal against his conviction.
