Kendrick Lamar has positioned himself as one of those artists who every time he drops new material the world stops and it listens.
Delivering a new song in the form of "All the Stars", it features TDE labelmate SZA and is taken from the upcoming soundtrack for Marvel's Black Panther. A hypnotic gem that hears the beautiful musical partnership between Kendrick and SZA flourish once again - the last time the two collaborated was on SZA's "Doves In the Wind", taken from her debut album Ctrl - everything from the crying string section to the heartbeat drum kicks play the perfect backdrop for two of 2017's most celebrated artists to do their thing.
Lyrically Kendrick takes a pop at those who take advantage of his kindness and think the world owes them something. He spits: "I hate people that feel entitled, lookin' at me crazy ‘cause I ain’t invite you/ Oh, you important?/ You’re the moral to the story, you endorsing/ Motherfucker, I don’t even like you."
SZA on the other hand gets her Rihanna "Diamonds" on. Forming an uplifting type of vibe she wonders whether the darkness will bring the stars closer to her. She sings: "Cause maybe the night and my dreams might let me know/ All the stars are closer, all the stars are closer, all the stars are closer."
Is this just another soundtrack song or could this do some serious things? We're going with the latter.
The soundtrack for the Black Panther movie will be produced and curated by Kendrick Lamar, alongside Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith.
Commenting on his contributions, Kendrick said in a statement: “Marvel Studios’ Black Panther is amazing, from its cast to its director. The magnitude of this film showcases a great marriage of art and culture. I’m truly honored to contribute my knowledge of producing sound and writing music alongside Ryan [Coogler] and Marvel’s vision.”
Black Panther arrives in theatres February 16th.
