A poll of 1,800 dog owners found the ideal outing would be in open fields (53%), woodland (47%) or parks (42%) along with sniffs at lampposts, tree trunks and flowers.

The ideal walk would also include the chance to meet around three friendly canine companions along the way.

Owners want walks where their dog will be safe (55%), quiet and not crowded (37%) with wide open spaces for their pet to run around (36%).

A selfless 38% said their hound’s enjoyment was a bigger priority than their own.

The research was commissioned by Animal Friends Pet Insurance, which has created a map of 10 of the UK’s best dog walking routes, making it easier to find walks that offer space and stimulation.

Jen Hipwell, head of veterinary services at the insurance company, said: “Walks are one of the best parts of life with a dog - a chance to spend time together, explore somewhere new and make the most of the summer safely.

“Every dog is different, so a great day out will look different depending on their age, breed, health, personality and confidence.”

The study also found beautiful scenery is key to 20% of respondents in order to have a satisfying walk.

However many owners admit convenience still plays a major role, with 33% favouring routes that are close to home or have access to bins (14%).

Nearly eight in 10 (79%) were more likely to choose a walk if it was near dog-friendly cafes providing water and treats.

Almost half (46%) said they become bored doing the same walks with 30% believing their dog did too – although an almost equal number (31%) said their pet was never discontented.

Nearly eight in 10 (79%) have felt guilty about not being more adventurous with excursions.

And for those polled by OnePoll.com said they’d be willing to travel an average of seven miles from home for a great trip with their pup.

The top three destinations dog owners would like to travel to were: the Lake District, New Forest National Park in Hampshire, and the South West Coast Path in Devon and Cornwall.

Weather conditions (61%), how hot the ground was for their dog’s paws (61%) and the likelihood of encountering other pooches and livestock (48%) were top considerations before taking their pet out.

And while 36% felt very confident they’d know how to identify and avoid potential risks to their dog on walks like steep terrain, coastal hazards and livestock, 56% were only somewhat confident.

"As well as the weather and any local conditions that could affect your plans, particularly during periods of hot weather.

“Pack for your dog's needs, whether that's plenty of fresh water, treats, a lead, a favourite toy or somewhere comfortable to rest.

“The map has been designed to help owners find a walk that suits their dog, so they can enjoy exploring somewhere new safely and confidently.”
