It turns out that you're more likely to die while snapping a selfie than be killed by a shark, according to Mashable's number-crunching.
The selfie death toll for 2015 is 12, compared to eight shark-related fatalities.
To be fair, we do spend more time with our iPhones than we do with our sharp-toothed swimming friends, but it's still a stark reminder to practice selfie-safety.

Of course, people don't actually die from taking the selfies like a Stephen King-inspired horror story (that we've just patented). Rather they die from falling while taking selfies at a dangerous height, or by being hit by a vehicle while they focus on their phones.
Either way, when your own phone becomes more of a threat to your life than the animal they based 'Jaws' on, then it's time to be a bit more careful.
Definitely don't take any selfies with sharks, anyway.
