The UK has a surprise entry in the world’s top 10 cities to visit

Tom Victor

Where are you going on holiday this year? Reykjavik? Vancouver? Hull?

Hull? Why not. The home of Philip Larkin, Paul Heaton and…erm…Nick Barmby has been named as one of Rough GuidesTop 10 Cities to visit in 2016.

Describing the year ahead as a ‘practice run’ for Hull’s stint as the UK City of Culture in 2017, the entry cites the Humberside city’s ‘picturesque Old Town’ and Freedom Festival.

Hull has notoriously featured high on lists of the UK’s worst towns and cities, but it seems its fortunes are changing.

The top 10 in full:

  1. Reykjavik, Iceland
  2. Mexico City, Mexico
  3. Seoul, South Korea
  4. Ljubljana, Slovenia
  5. Wroclaw, Poland
  6. Nashville, USA
  7. Amsterdam, The Netherlands
  8. Hull, UK
  9. Vancouver, Canada
  10. Agra, India

Steve Bruce has transformed the city, albeit not in the way he envisaged.
