The absolutely bizarre ‘floss’ dance is taking over the internet

James Dawson

Celebrities have been posting videos of themselves doing it on Instagram.

Hey, remember that YouTube video that used to be one of the most watched on YouTube?

You know the one, it had a guy dressed in an orange t-shirt, who looked the spitting image of Barry from EastEnders, dancing his way from the 1950s to the present day.

C’mon, you know what I mean… this one:

Well, it looks like he might need to update his routine, as a whole new dance just saddled into town, walked into the saloon and ordered a bourbon on the rocks.

They’re calling it the ‘floss’ dance, although it has absolutely nothing to do with dental hygiene.

To pull it off, you swing your hips in the opposite direction to your arms, then after you begin swinging you move one arm behind your back and bring it out to the front.

All the while you need to get those hips swinging from side-to-side with each beat. Then rinse and repeat. After a while, it starts to look kinda trance-like.

If that sounds a bit confusing, here’s an example of Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things doing the move:

People have been videoing themselves doing the dance and posting it on social media, with a video of Dele Alli busting it out circulating recently. In fact, it’s entered full mum and dad territory now and has even made an appearance on Good Morning Britain.

The move was invented by viral star The Backpack Kid, who even performed the move on Saturday Night Live. Here are a few more examples:
